Just about all cities, towns or burgs have a downtown area. Usually where all things began. Whether that was hundreds of years ago or just a few years back is irrelevant. What I like about going downtown with your camera is the contrast between the old and the new. buildings. Structures that have been there since the beginning versus the brand new structures springing up around them. It almost always is a spot for some good photography. I ventured last week to our downtown area and captured a few things myself . . .
In the early 1960's my Father purchased something that changed my life forever. . .A Polaroid camera. It was rather strange in appearance, but it was the latest and greatist in technology at the time. You could snap the shutter, and in seconds out came a picture that slowly developed in front of your eyes in just a few minutes! It was a like having a portable darkroom. Magic! That camera was a springboard into the next decade when I bought my first 35 mm SLR. As they say, the rest is history.

Bridges
My photographic eye is drawn toward structures from time to time. Architecture is a great theme to compose and be creative with your camera. Bridges in particular. I usually suggest a wide angle format, but any lens in your arsenal will do depending on your position. New England has some great covered bridges, however just about any location has some kind of a structure going across a river, creek or body of water. Here are a couple examples.

Whiskey and Poker
When I was a young boy, Westerns were King. They ruled the movies and television. The Lone Ranger, John Wayne, Roy Rodgers and the cast of Gunsmoke were every bit as famous as Justin Bieber and Katie Perry are nowadays. Seems like every western had a saloon scene where cowboys were in a smokey room sitting around an old wooden table playing poker and drinking cheap whiskey. Thus the inspiration for the following photos. Perhaps you can relate . . .

Motorcycles & Classic Cars
Almost as abundant as people, these two photographic themes go together like two peas in the pod. There are of course, all sizes, shapes and colors that seem to add to the endless variety of images you can get.. Car shows are great to go to and give you access to the details sometimes missed. At any rate, here are a few examples in my image archive with a transportation theme including some old gas cans and pumps.

Hot Dog
Every once in a while, you have to have a hot dog. Seems like they always taste better outdoors. Either you are at a picnic or at the ballpark and the urge hits you. I tend to favor the Chicago Dog, but there are lots of other favorites from every corner of this country we live in. New York Dogs, Chile Dogs (I prefer Skyline), Slaw Dogs, and the list goes on. Whatever your favorite, it continues and will continue to be one of life's little pleasures. In fact there is a little place in the City I frequent called: " Hot Dog Heaven" - Great name. (email me for directions). These two photos remind me of just how good a hot dog is.
